勢至菩薩は、足をふみおろすと大地がゆれるほどの威力を持つことから「得大勢菩薩」「大勢至菩薩」といわれます。慈悲の観音菩薩とともに阿弥陀如来の脇侍です。勢至菩薩は、ものごとを正しく見きわめる智恵を持ち、その偉大な智恵で人々を迷いや苦しみから救い、極楽浄土にみちびいてくれるのです。ちなみに、智恵第一といわれた法然の幼名は「勢至丸」でした。観音菩薩の基本形である聖観音に似ていますが、見わけるポイントは宝冠に水瓶がついていることです。水瓶には人々の願いをかなえる功徳水が入っているとされます。 うま年の守り本尊であり、「智恵明瞭」「家内安全」「除災招福」のご利益があるといわれています。また、勢至菩薩は月の化身（姿を変えてあらわれたもの）とされ、二十三夜に飲食をともにし、お経をとなえ、月をおがんで悪霊を追いはらう行事があります。勢至菩薩さま
