Fugen Bosatsu is worshipped along with Monju Bosatsu as a flanking deity of Shakyamuni Buddha, and is usually depicted as a mounted elephant seated on a lotus stand on top of a white elephant with six tusks, holding his palms together. The elephant is considered a sacred animal in India, and its white color is a symbol of purity, while the six tusks represent the six virtues of the six paramitas (the six virtues that a bodhisattva must practice in order to become a Buddha). Fugen Bosatsu appears before practitioners who recite the Lotus Sutra to protect them from demons. Fugen Bosatsu is especially worshipped by women because the Lotus Sutra says that women can attain enlightenment and become Buddhas, even though it was believed that they could not become Buddhas until then. It is the guardian deity for the year of Tatsu and the year of the snake, and is said to bring blessings of health and prolongation of life and increase in profits. 普賢菩薩の名は「普く（すべてにわたって）賢い仏さま」という意味です。仏の智恵のはたらきが慈悲であり、それを行動でしめすのが普賢菩薩なのです。 普賢菩薩は、文殊菩薩とともに釈迦如来の脇侍 としてまつられます。6本の牙を持つ白いゾウの上に置おかれた蓮台にすわり、合掌している騎象像が一般的です。ゾウはインドでは神聖な動物とされ、白色はきよらかさのシンボルです。6本の牙は六波羅蜜（菩薩が仏となるための6つの修行による徳）をあらわします。 普賢菩薩は『法華経』をとなえる修行者の前にあらわれ、悪魔から守ってくれます。また『法華経』には、それまで仏にはなれないとされていた女性でも悟りを得て仏になれると書かれていることから、とくに女性から信仰されています。たつ年・み年（へび年）の守り本尊で、「息災延命」「増益」のご利益があるといわれています。
