Description
Kyoto. 250 years ago to the modern age, the beauty of the royal road that transcends time and space. Permanently preserved edition looking at the entire Maruyama*Shijo school! In the 18th century, in Kyoto during the Edo period (1603-1868), known as the age of "New Currents," Maruyama Okyo brought a new style of sketch painting to the city, replacing the Kano school, which had been the mainstay of Kyoto until then, and established the Maruyama school. Koshun, who had studied under Yosano Buson and Okyo, created the Shijo School, and the Maruyama*Shijo School, which combined the two schools, became a major influence on the Kyoto art world and was succeeded by modern Japanese painting. This book is the official catalogue and book of the exhibition [From Maruyama Okyo to the Modern Kyoto Art World]. It features 124 works, including 12 important cultural properties, by 45 artists, including Okyo, Kureshun, Takeuchi Seiho, and Uemura Shoen. The exhibition also features a special feature on Daijyo-ji Temple in Kozumi-cho, Hyogo Prefecture, which houses "Daijyo-ji Sliding Screen Painting," a masterpiece from Okyo's final years and the first in 10 years at the Tokyo exhibition and 24 years in Kyoto, which is the centerpiece of the exhibition. At the same time, many enlarged images of the 13 fusuma sliding door paintings, in which various styles of painting have developed, are featured. As a special feature, one side of the Kyakuden (guest hall) is opened to the public to show how it glows golden in the sunlight, and how it appears fantastic in the dark after the sun goes down, emerging golden in the darkness. The photographs were taken by photographer Kazuyoshi Miyoshi. In the "Kyoto, Learning about the Era of New Flowers" section at the beginning of the book, Edo researcher* and illustrator Zenyoji Susumu presents a map reproducing the streets of Kyoto in the Edo period. The map conveys the energy and vitality of the townspeople of that time. This is a book that transcends time and space from the Kyoto of 250 years ago to the modern era, and provides everything you need to know about the Maruyama*Shijo School!
