Description
The artist of lyricism and silence, Kobayakawa Akisho, painted a unique war picture [Kuninotate]. He was a Buddhist monk, traveled extensively both in Japan and abroad, and served in the military. This is the first book and catalogue of a large-scale retrospective exhibition of his work. Many of his works are exhibited for the first time. The book reveals the full picture of Kobayakawa Akisho, the most remarkable modern Japanese painter in Kyoto. In recent years, he has been the focus of increasing attention due to exhibitions held in Tokyo. Although his most notable work is the war painting "Kokuninotate," most of his works have been little known. This book is the official catalog and publication of the first large-scale retrospective exhibition of Akiyoshi Kobayakawa's work, "Akiyoshi: Requiem for a Traveling Artist," and traces his career with approximately 110 works. It introduces his fresh, lyrical works and unique war paintings, which were born from his unusual background of joining a temple as a child, serving as a soldier and a painter, and a life of repeated travel both at home and abroad. Many of the works have been newly photographed and published for the first time, and their appeal is fully conveyed. In addition to a detailed chronology and bibliography reflecting the latest research results, the book also includes many columns by researchers and family members of the deceased, revealing not only the works but also the true face of Akiyoshi Kobayakawa as a person. This is a substantial volume that will serve as a foundation for future research on Akiyoshi. *Bilingual (English and Japanese) *Japanese/English Author / Akihiro Kobayakawa Supervision/Kyoto Prefectural Museum of Kyoto, Tokyo Station Gallery, Tottori Prefectural Museum |
