A new modern history from the perspective of international doll exchange!

[The voiceless puppet ambassadors were dispatched as a sign of friendship and innocent national diplomacy. Eiichi Shibusawa, Tsuneo Matsudaira, the Czar of Russia, members of the Red Cross, the mayor of New York, the regent of Manchukuo, and the Queen of England... We will peruse the history of these people who were fascinated by and expected dolls.

This book reveals the history of international doll exchange in modern Japan. By analyzing the changes in thought surrounding dolls in Japan since the Meiji era, the book shows how dolls took on a new cultural role. It also carefully follows the development of international relations surrounding dolls, and discusses the contribution of the Boys' Red Cross to international doll exchange, which has not received any attention until now, and its connection to the history of doll giving among European countries, such as the case of [French-style toy diplomacy], which set a precedent for international doll exchange. It is suggested that in the modern era, dolls were expected to improve international relations and were recognized as something that had great power.
