Description
Masumi Kamiyama(Author) What is the strategy to secure power and reign as a ruler? In the 11th and 12th centuries, the regions of France that were not subject to royal rule were ruled by hereditary lords. They often exerted powerful political and military influence, but their strategy was to establish their image as rulers through the control of memory and consciousness by following a specific narrative in order to spread their authority in the local communities. This study elucidates the relationship between the various families of the lords and the local communities, which sometimes planned to gain religious authority, and reveals the characteristics of the lords' power, especially in northern France, from a political and cultural perspective. |
