[This is the lyrics to "The Tale of Genji", one of the three books known as the "Goto" (Gotoemonogatari Emaki), including two scenes from "Suzumushi", "Yugiri", and "Goho".
The Tale of Genji" is a well-known masterpiece of Japanese literature. [The Tale of Genji Picture Scroll is the oldest extant picture scroll in Japan. It is known that a little more than three scrolls were handed down to the Owari Tokugawa family and a little less than one scroll to the Awa Hachisuka family during the Edo period (1603-1868). The Awa Hachisuka family's copy was later leaked to the city and is now housed in the Goto Museum of Art, where it is generally referred to as the "Goto" version. It is commonly referred to as the "National Treasure Tale of Genji Picture Scroll" because it is the only one among the many picture scrolls based on "The Tale of Genji" that has been designated a national treasure.
