This work is one of the most decorative Fuji paintings by Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958). It is a simple composition with a bird's-eye view of the summit of Fuji in a sea of white clouds spreading over a rich gold ground. Fuji in summer. The bright and generous atmosphere of this painting demonstrates the rich sense of color and grand compositional style that characterize Taikan's works, including his folding screen paintings. During his lifetime, Taikan painted numerous works on the theme of Mt. This work, produced around 1913, is one of them. Fuji from the top of Tateyama, and other similar paintings similar to this one depicting Fuji peeking over a sea of clouds are known as "Gunsei-Fuji" (ca. 1917-18, Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art) and "Asayo Reiho" (1927, Imperial Household Agency, San-nomaru Shozokan Collection). Fuji (circa 1917-18, Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art) and Choyo Reiho (1927, Imperial Household Agency, San-no-Maru Shozokan).

Yokoyama Taikan

Born in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, between 1868 and 1958. Studied under Tenshin Okakura. [Yokoyama Taikan was a central figure in the Nippon Bijutsu-in (Japan Art Institute), where he worked on innovations in Japanese painting, including the creation of new techniques such as the "fuzzy body" method. He pursued the "art of imagination" that boldly utilized classical expressions such as Yamato-e and Rimpa school. His representative works include "Yozakura (Cherry Blossoms in the Evening)" and "Ikiryu-ryu-ten.
