*Scaled folding screen Yokoyama Taikan [Fuji in the clouds Yokoyama Taikan, Taisho era, ca. 1913 (Lent by Tokyo National Museum) This work is one of the most decorative Fuji paintings by Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958). It is a simple composition with a bird's-eye view of the summit of Fuji in a sea of white clouds spreading over a rich gold ground. Fuji in summer. The bright and generous atmosphere of this painting demonstrates the rich sense of color and grand compositional style that characterize Taikan's works, including his folding screen paintings. During his lifetime, Taikan painted numerous works on the theme of Mt. This work, produced around 1913, is one of them. Fuji from the top of Tateyama, and other similar paintings similar to this one depicting Fuji peeking over a sea of clouds are known as "Gunsei-Fuji" (ca. 1917-18, Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art) and "Asayo Reiho" (1927, Imperial Household Agency, San-nomaru Shozokan Collection). 濃厚な金地に大きく広がる白色の雲海のなかに、鮮烈な群青色で富士の山頂のみを俯瞰的にあらわした簡潔な構成のこの作品は、横山大観(1868−1958)が描いた富士のなかでも特に装飾的な性格の強い作品です。夏の富士を描き、明るくおおらかな雰囲気を持つ表現には、屏風絵をはじめとする大観の作品の特徴である豊かな色彩感覚と雄大な構図法がよく発揮されています。大観はその生涯にわたって富士山をテーマとした作品を数多く描いており、その数は1500点にも及ぶといわれています。大正2年(1913)頃制作のこの作品もその中のひとつです。立山の頂上から富士を眺めることを特に好んだという大観ですが、雲海の上に頂を覗かせた富士を描く本作品に類似した構図の屏風絵は、ほかにも「群青富士」(1917−18頃、静岡県立美術館蔵)や、「朝陽霊峰」(1927、宮内庁三の丸尚藏館蔵)が知られています。
横山大観(よこやま たいかん)
明治〜昭和33年(1868〜1958)、茨城県水戸生まれ。岡倉天心に学ぶ。「朦朧体」など新しい技法を生み出すなど日本画の革新に努め、日本美術院の中心として活動。大和絵や琳派など古典の表現を大胆に生かす「想の芸術」を追求した。代表作は『夜桜』『生々流転』。
