*Reduced size picture scroll [National Treasure: BANDAINON ERAPURI] (set of three)*
Heian period, Idemitsu Museum of Arts

[The three-volume set of the Ban Dainagon Emaki (Picture Scrolls of Ban Dainagon) is considered one of the four greatest picture scrolls in Japan, along with The Tale of Genji, Caricatures of Birds and Beasts, and The Shigisan Engi Emaki (Picture Scrolls of the Tale of Genji). The bold colors and depictions of people have been preserved in this color-printed, reduced-size picture scroll. It is said that in the late Heian period (794-1185), Emperor Go-Shirakawa had Tokiwa Mitsunaga paint these picture scrolls based on the "Otenmon Incident," which actually occurred about 300 years ago.

Scroll 1
A long time ago, during the reign of Emperor Seiwa of Mizuo, the Otenmon Gate was burned down by arson. The Left Minister* Genshin was accused of the crime by the Dainagon of the time, Ban Yoshio (Ban Dainagon). The emaki boldly depicts the burning Otenmon Gate with black smoke billowing out of it. The picture is seamless, depicting officials on their way to the scene of the fire, the burning Otenmon Gate, and the crowd watching the fire.

Volume II
Ubei's houseboy (a low-ranking official) saw Ban Dainagon coming down from the top of the Otenmon Gate tower that night. The prefect, who knew the real culprit, was saddened to hear that the Left Minister was to be punished, but was unable to speak out. At that time, the prefect's child got into a fight with a child of the Dainagon family's cashier (a low-ranking official). Deinoh came out to mediate the fight and, using his power as a shield, beat the prefect's child to a pulp.
Deinou [What is a prefect's child talking about? As long as my lord Dainagon-sama is around, there is no blame on me no matter what I do.]
The prefect [Your master can be as good as a man as long as I keep my mouth shut. If I open my mouth and reveal the Daimon's secret, he will not get away with it.]
And *

Volume 3
Rumors reached the Imperial Court, and the prefect was hauled before the officials. The prefect finally told the truth. Thus, Ban Dainagon was interrogated and sent into exile.
