*Reduced size picture scroll [National Treasure: BANDAINON ERAPURI] (set of three)* Heian period, Idemitsu Museum of Arts [The three-volume set of the Ban Dainagon Emaki (Picture Scrolls of Ban Dainagon) is considered one of the four greatest picture scrolls in Japan, along with The Tale of Genji, Caricatures of Birds and Beasts, and The Shigisan Engi Emaki (Picture Scrolls of the Tale of Genji). The bold colors and depictions of people have been preserved in this color-printed, reduced-size picture scroll. It is said that in the late Heian period (794-1185), Emperor Go-Shirakawa had Tokiwa Mitsunaga paint these picture scrolls based on the "Otenmon Incident," which actually occurred about 300 years ago. Scroll 1 A long time ago, during the reign of Emperor Seiwa of Mizuo, the Otenmon Gate was burned down by arson. The Left Minister* Genshin was accused of the crime by the Dainagon of the time, Ban Yoshio (Ban Dainagon). The emaki boldly depicts the burning Otenmon Gate with black smoke billowing out of it. The picture is seamless, depicting officials on their way to the scene of the fire, the burning Otenmon Gate, and the crowd watching the fire. Volume II Ubei's houseboy (a low-ranking official) saw Ban Dainagon coming down from the top of the Otenmon Gate tower that night. The prefect, who knew the real culprit, was saddened to hear that the Left Minister was to be punished, but was unable to speak out. At that time, the prefect's child got into a fight with a child of the Dainagon family's cashier (a low-ranking official). 平安時代 出光美術館蔵
「源氏物語絵巻」「鳥獣人物戯画」「信貴山縁起絵巻」と並び日本の四大絵巻物の一つと称される絵巻物「伴大納言絵詞」全三巻。大胆な彩色や人物描写もそのまま、カラー刷の縮小絵巻物に仕立てました。平安時代末期、後白河法皇が300年程前に実際に起こった「応天門の変」を題材に、常盤光長に描かせた絵巻物と伝えられています。
第一巻
今は昔、水尾の帝(清和天皇)の御世に応天門が放火で焼けるという事件がありました。時の大納言、伴善男(伴大納言)の訴えにより、罪を着せられた左大臣・源信。絵巻には、黒煙をあげて燃え上がる応天門が大胆に描かれています。火災現場に向かう役人たち、燃え上がる応天門とそれを眺める群集が、切れ目のない画面に描かれます。
第二巻
右兵衛の舎人(下級役人)は、あの夜応天門の楼上から降りてきた伴大納言を見かけていました。真犯人を知っていた舎人は、左大臣が処罰を受けると聞き、悲しく思いつつも口外出来ずにおりました。そんな折、舎人の子供は大納言家の出納(下級役人)の子供とケンカします。ケンカの仲裁に出てきた出納は、権力を笠に着て舎人の子供を打ち伏せます。
出納「舎人ふぜいが何をぬかすか。おれの主君の大納言様がいる限り、おれが何をしようと何のお咎めもないさ」
舎人「おれが黙っているからお前の主人も人並みにしていられるのだ。おれが口を開いて大納言の秘密をばらせば、大納言はただではすまないのだぞ」
そして・・・
第三巻
噂は朝廷にまで達し、舎人は役人に引き出されます。とうとう真相を話した舎人。こうして伴大納言は取り調べの上、流刑に処されたのです。
