Description
What is Senju Sumi? Kuretake is now known as a manufacturer of pens and calligraphy supplies, but it was founded in 1902 as an ink manufacturer and has been making solid ink ever since. Since its inception in 1975, Kuretake has released a few new products each year. While ordinary solid ink is usually rectangular and simple in shape for practical use and easy polishing, Senju Sumi has a lot of special large shaped shaped ink and is inspired by national treasures such as the Shosoin Imperial Treasure. In order to produce sumi ink with complex shapes* patterns, advanced skills are required at each step of the process: wooden mold, molding, drying, and decorating. In the collection of artist Kawai Gyokudo, there is a Song Dynasty (960-1279) ink piece titled "Tucho Ippin" (Tucho One Piece). It was made by combining two wooden forms. The circle in the shape represents "morning sun" and the crane is "one of a kind. At the time, this ink was mainly made from pine needles, but Kuretake decided to use a blue ink from the "Waboku Karaboku Zusetsu" (Illustrated Guide to Japanese and Chinese Ink). Kuretake has restored it as a blue ink based on the ink score in the [Illustrated Guide to Japanese and Chinese Ink]. |
