Description
Contains about 200 [floor plans] of Western-style modern houses in the Taisho* early Showa period! This collection contains selected [floor plans] from housing guide advertisements along railroad lines in the Kansai suburbs developed in the Taisho and early Showa periods. Shinya Hashizume, an architectural historian in Osaka, has selected a wide variety of floor plans from his vast collection to decipher the history of life in those days. [Modern/Retro Houses: New but Nostalgic] In the Meiji era, the wealthy built a Western-style house annexed to a Japanese-style main house, and used both Japanese and Western lifestyles. In contrast, from the Taisho to the Showa period, a large number of middle-class residences that blended elements of both Japan and the West were supplied for the newly urbanized suburban dwellers. I have collected many pamphlets and guide maps distributed to promote the sale of houses as materials for researching the urban culture and lifestyle of the time. In particular, I have sales promotion materials related to dozens of residential areas, mainly examples developed by electric railway companies and land companies along various railroad lines, with Osaka as my home city. (omitted) In this type of suburban housing, many new [Western-style housing] or homes that attempted to blend Japanese and Western styles would be offered. This book is a compilation of floor plans from the many examples I have collected that give an idea of the housing conditions of the time. Although the houses were modern and up-to-date at the time of their completion, they would probably be evaluated as nostalgic retro homes when viewed from today's perspective. We hope that you will explore this modern yet retro floor plan. (Excerpt from [Introduction]) Shinya Hashizume Born in Osaka in 1960. M.S. in Architecture, Graduate School of Engineering, Kyoto University. D. in Environmental Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka University. Doctor of Engineering. Author of many books including [Labyrinthine Cities of the Meiji Era][Bakemono Yashiki][Festive [Empire]][Nippon Bubble Heritage Architecture 100][Japanese Amusement Park][The Japan That Could Have Been][[Water Metropolis] Osaka Story], etc. Currently, he is a special professor at the Research Promotion Organization of Osaka Prefecture University and director of its Tourism Industry Strategy Research Institute. |
