The Volga basket is made of grass native to grasslands, a type of grassy field called Napier grass or elephant grass, which is also known as Nanchem Gulu (Kassena Nankana), Kulukata (Gruni), Kpenpening (Bulk), Kulkara (Dagomba), etc. Kulkara (Dagomba). Most of them seem to grow wild in wetlands near riverside areas or along banks. The weavers cut them and bring them home, cut them to the same length, dye them in many different colors according to their designs, sort them, and store them.
