Description
Akito Akagi, a lacquer artist, spins a new interpretation of "Mingei" (folk art). What is "folk art" and "beautiful things" as described by Muneyoshi Yanagi? The author, a Wajima lacquerware artisan and lacquer craftsman, has been practicing and contemplating for 15 years, and this full-length essay approaches the essence of the subject. This book will be a guide for all those who are involved in craftsmanship in this day and age, and all those who make their living from their relationship with nature. Anyone who has even the slightest interest in beautiful things and things cannot turn their backs on Muneyoshi Yanagi's [folk art] and move forward. The author, an actual lacquer craftsman, has written a book that breaks down the core of "Japanese beauty" as taught by Yanagi, and shows how it is possible to create a beautiful work of art. He presents us with the essence of the art and what the next generation of craftspeople should carry on. *Wazumi Sakata (Kozukutsu Sakata) [from the obi text].
