| From 6 years old [One day, a big white elephant came to Otubelu, the landowner. One day, a big white elephant comes to Otubel, the landowner, and Otubel tricks the elephant into overworking as she pleases. At first the white elephant enjoys its labor, but gradually its food is reduced and it grows weak. On the advice of the moon, the white elephant writes a letter to his friends, who read it and rush to Otubelu's mansion. The friends are impressed by the way they unite and help. 「オツベルときたら大したもんだ。稲扱器械の六台も据えつけて、のんのんのんのんのんと、・・・」ある日、地主のオツベルのところに大きな白い象がやってきて、オツベルは象をうまく騙して思うがままに過労をさせる。初めは労働を楽しんでいた白象だが、徐々に食べ物を減らされて弱っていく。白象は月の助言で仲間たちに手紙を書き、それを読んだ仲間の象たちはオツベルの邸へと押し寄せていく。。仲間達が一体になって、助ける姿に感銘を覚えます。最後の燃えるような「赤」が印象的な作品。決してハッピーエンドではないこの物語を荒井良二が色鮮やかに描きあげた絵本です。
