Description
Gion Matsuri Soft double gauze hand towel This Rakuchu-zu hand towel depicts the Yamahoko-cho of the Gion Festival, divided into the left and right halberd towns of the previous and subsequent festivals. Yamaboko floats are finely drawn on the soft gauze material, making this hand towel a fun way to enjoy the Gion Festival. (Illustration: Yuka Mori) Gion Festival is a festival held at Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto from July 1 to 31. The festival is said to have begun as a prayer to ward off the plague, and has a long history dating back to the Heian period (794-1185). The Yamaboko procession and other events are a summer tradition in Kyoto. |
