灰や熾き（おき）に接した部分だけが強還元焼成になり、色変わりの発色をしている部分を「自然桟切」と言います。また、窯の焼きあがりの時に、作品の周りに炭を投入し、炭の強還元炎と一酸化炭素による還元によって、部分的に白〜青＝季とコントラストの強い色変わりの景色を生み出す手法を桟切と言います。
