| *Five-color prayer flagsThere are five-color flags, called talchos, that stand out in Tibet, Nepal, the North Indian region, and elsewhere in their characteristic landscapes. These tulchos have sutras written on them, and each time the flag is displayed and flutters in the wind, it means that a sutra has been recited. The order of the five colors is blue*white*red*green*yellow, each representing the five elements of heaven*wind*fire*water*earth. These flags, which to our eyes look colorful and beautifully decorated, must have a good reason, and they must represent the prayers of the Himalayan people, who live their entire lives in accordance with their religion. このタルチョーには経文が書かれており、この旗を飾り、それが風になびく度に、読経したことになるのだそうです。
また、五色の順番は青・白・赤・緑・黄の順に決まっており、それぞれが天・風・火・水・地の五大を表現しています。
私たちの目から見ると、カラフルで綺麗な飾り付けに見えるこの旗達にも、やはりきちんとした理由があり、生活の全てを宗教とともに生きている、ヒマラヤの人々の祈りが込められているのでしょう。
このタルチョーは、ネパールで作られたナイロン製の物で、菩薩と経文が一枚一枚に刷られています。固定の仕方により、様々な場所でお使いいただけるかと思います。
