*Saarangi in the Land of the Himalayas

A Nepalese sarangi with a rustic design is now in stock. The saarangi is a type of rubbed string instrument spread across the Indian subcontinent. While the north Indian saarangi is a complex instrument with many resonant strings, the Nepalese saarangi consists of only four strings. It is simply cut from a single tree and covered with goatskin. The fingerboard has a very short characteristic shape in relation to the whole.

It is an indispensable instrument in Nepalese folk music, as is the percussion instrument [madal]. It is played more for street singing than for court music, and is characterized by its simple tone.

This Sarangi comes from a traditional music shop in Kathmandu, and is actually made for local performance. It is a larger size than the traditional one, and the sound is splendid.

The design is also wonderful, full of exoticism, and would be great as an interior decoration.
