The shanai is a reed instrument similar to the Indian shahnai. It has a nostalgic and melancholy tone. The ornamentation, including the aperture, is very beautiful (although it is distorted because it is made of soft metal*) and very attractive as an interior decoration. ネパールには「パンチェ・バジャPanche baja」と呼ばれる伝統的な5つの楽器セットがあります。ドーラク（太鼓）やジャリ（シンバル）、ナーシェンガ（大きく湾曲した管楽器）といった楽器たちで、シャーナイはこのセットのなかに含まれる一つです。
神聖な儀式、とくに結婚式には欠かせない楽器群で、ネパールの人々の心の原風景の一つと言っても差し支えないでしょう。
シャーナイはインドのシャハナーイと同様のリード楽器になっています。どこか懐かしいような哀愁を誘うような音色になっています。開口部をはじめ飾りは大変美しく（柔らかい金属で作られているので歪んではいるのですが・・・）、インテリアとしても大変魅力的です。珍しい楽器をお探しの人にぜひおすすめの一品です。
