Description
Shigaraki*Seto*Tokoname*Echizen*Tanba*Bizen*The Six Old Kilns of Japan: Shigaraki*Seto*Tokoname*Echizen*Tanba*Bizen, which was registered as a Japanese Heritage in 2017. Shigaraki ware is one of these, and is loved by many people for its traditional techniques and craftsmen's wisdom that produce a gentle texture with the unique flavor of Shigaraki clay and the warm fire color woven by the flames. *The history of Shigaraki raccoon dog figurines is relatively short, and the first one is said to have been made by Tetsuzo Fujiwara, a potter, in the Meiji period. *Raccoon dogs are appreciated as good luck charms, and are often placed in front of the eaves of stores as a fashionable way to promote business, since raccoon dogs are associated with "overtaking others. The most popular type of raccoon dogs is the [sake-buying boy] type, in which a raccoon dog wears a braided hat, tilts his head slightly, and stands with a sake bottle in his right hand and a bank book in his left hand, in reference to the Shigaraki eight-phase omens. |
