[Japan's famous stones]
Itoigawa Jade

Itoigawa purple jade, processed into the shape of a magadama.
Itoigawa jade, designated as the national stone of Japan, has a mottled pattern in pale green.
This jade is made by skilled craftsmen who have carefully selected the best stones and carved out only the best parts of the stones.
Jade from Itoigawa is the only jade in Japan and one of the best in the world [jewelry room jade], and is highly valued for its high quality.
The jade origin of Itoigawa City is located in the Kotaki area upstream of the Himegawa River, which flows into the Sea of Japan, and the Hashidate area upstream of the Aomi River.
Some areas are designated as natural monuments. Jade is found on the banks of these rivers and on the beaches near their mouths.
One of the characteristics of jade found in Itoigawa, especially in the ocean, is that it is beautiful enough in its raw state, whereas Myanmar jadeite, also famous for its high quality, has a brownish crust on its surface due to weathering.
In contrast to Myanmar, where commercial mining is conducted on a large scale, jade from Itoigawa is protected almost in its natural state, so the amount of jade on the market is small, and its rarity is also a major value.

*Place of Origin:Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture

It is said to be the only place in Japan where jade is produced. Currently, it is a natural monument and cannot be mined.
In 2016, jade was selected as the "Stone of Japan (National Stone)" by the Japan Mineralogical Society.
In Japan, jade has long been used as a symbol of power by the imperial family and has been processed into katadama, a type of jewelry, and has also been excavated from ancient burial mounds in various regions.
Jade is said to be the oldest described to have been used in Japan, and was also a symbol of power.
Jade has a beauty that fascinates the viewer with a sense of history.

What is Nippon Meiseki?

Stones produced in various regions of Japan and registered on the list of famous stones according to the regulations set by the Association.
The list is based on the regulations set by the Association,
Its value is recognized.
A gemstone is identified by several criteria, depending on the object.

*Originally from a region with culturally significant universal value.

*The stone itself has historical significance.

*Items with value that should be enhanced due to rarity, etc.

*Geologically or mineralogically attractive.

*Things that have become or may become difficult to preserve for future generations.

*They should be widely disseminated and recognized for their existence.

*Symbolizing outstanding natural beauty, a natural phenomenon of aesthetic importance, or a place of origin.

These are the requirements for a representative stone recognized by the Association.
The significance and value of a stone is enhanced when it is given the title of "famous stone," rather than just being a stone or a specialty product. There are also stones whose charms have yet to be recognized, and beautiful stones that have fallen into obscurity with the passage of time.
By certifying Japanese stones as "Meiseki" stones, they are now receiving new recognition.
