無患子（ムクロジ）の種子はかたく、数珠や羽根突きの羽根の元にある黒い玉の材料になることで知られています。
名前の由来には、ムクロジが家にあると病を知らないとして「無患子（むくろし）」と呼ばれるようになったという説、
実のなる様子を「ツブナリ」と表現し、これが転訛したという説、
同科のモクゲンジを示す漢語「木欒子」が誤って使われたという説があります。
新緑や黄葉、落葉期の果実の様子など季節の変化に富み、薬用になる魔除けの霊力を持つ木としても伝えられ、
寺院や神社を中心として観賞用にも植栽されています。
果実は漢方では延命皮（えんめいひ）と呼ばれ、サポニンを含み、泡立つので、
洗剤として使われていました。
