[Made in Japan, Long-established Todaya Shoten] Shizome Tenugui Hand Towel

[Todaya Shoten] Todaya Shoten is a long-established tenugui towel store in Nihonbashi, established in 1872. All designs and colors are original. While carrying on the traditions, we value the spirit of "Onshochishin" with bold and innovative designs and colors. Most of our tenugui are made by hand, starting from the paper pattern to the dyeing and folding process. We introduce tenugui with a warmth and deep flavor of hand-dyeing that cannot be felt with machine production.

Todaya Shoten's Nashien-dyed tenugui hand towels: 3 points of particularity
[Fabric]*The peace of mind of natural materials. Unlike synthetic fibers, Nashien-dyed fabrics are made of cotton, which is gentle to the skin. Cotton is strong, lightweight, and hygroscopic, so it absorbs sweat and moisture well and dries quickly. The more you use it, the more the texture of the fabric will increase and it will become more comfortable against your skin. The more it is washed, the more the dyed color settles and the more you can enjoy the color change. For yukata and other products, we are particular about high quality and unique fabrics.
Nashien-dyed tenugui hand towels are made of specially woven fabrics under the brand names of "Nioka" and "Wakamatsu". Both are characterized by their wider width and greater durability due to the greater number of stitches (the number of stitches per inch of fabric) compared to Tokuoka and Prime.

[Todaya Shoten makes two main types of shizome stencils: hand-engraving by craftsmen and machine-engraving. Machine engraving is a technique that has been developed in recent years and the number of orders is gradually increasing, but both hand engraving and machine engraving have their own characteristics and are used differently depending on the pattern. In hand-engraving, a craftsman who is well versed in the process of Shizome carving takes care of details such as the thickness of lines and the size of dots by changing the angle of the blade, etc. to reproduce the original image when it is dyed, and then carves with exquisite adjustment.

The composition of difficult patterns such as Hosokawa-zome (multiple patterns) is also a technique that only a craftsman can perform. Machine engraving has some advantages such as easy duplication of data and cheaper price than hand engraving depending on the pattern.

[Traditional Crafts: Shizome]*Nashizome yukata and tenugui are dyed at a shizome factory, and most of the manufacturing process is done by hand by skilled craftsmen. Most of the production process is done by hand by skilled craftsmen. The Japanese sense of beauty, which elaborates on the invisible parts and the reverse side, requires that the side to be used always be the front side. For this reason, Nashien Dyeing has chosen to use shizome as its main technique, which allows the dye to permeate the cloth from top to bottom, down to the core of the fibers at the dyeing stage.

[888 Hagi]

Hagi is in a representative position for botanical patterns. Hagi has also been used diversely as an object of beauty for Japanese women since the Nara and Heian periods in dyeing and weaving as something that gives a sense of freshness and coolness.

[418 hozukushi]

This collection features auspicious and lucky motifs such as uchide no kozuchi, gourds, weights, treasure scrolls, and treasure beads, as well as cranes and turtles.
The motifs of hozukushi, which have been handed down to this day, are the result of the eight auspicious ideas introduced from China in the Muromachi period (1336-1573) and arranged in a Japanese style over the years.

[868 goldfish bowl].

The cool voice of a goldfish vendor can hardly be heard today. The goldfish, which are a summer tradition at fairs and other events, are also a familiar pattern on children's yukata (light cotton kimono).
