Originally a traditional Japanese craft, goat leatherwork was brought back to India by Tagore, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature. The leather is tanned with tannin extracted from the bark*stems of plants, then delicately patterned with molds, and finally colored by hand. The tanning process is environmentally friendly and does not use mineral tanning agents such as chrome. |

デーヴァナーガリーはヒンディー語やネパール語の表記に用いられる文字で「神聖なる都市文字」という意味。そのデーヴァナーガリー文字を1字ずつランダムに配置した柄のシリーズです。シガレットポーチという品名ですが、カードケースや小物入れとしても使えるマルチケースです。。

西インド・ベンガル地方の山羊革細工、『シャンティニケタン』。もともとは日本の伝統工芸であった山羊革細工を、ノーベル文学賞を受賞したタゴールがインドに持ち帰りひろめたもの。植物の樹皮・茎などから抽出したタンニンで革をなめし、型で繊細な模様をつけ、最後に手で色付けして仕上げられます。クロムなどの鉱物なめし剤を使用しない、体や環境に優しいなめし方なのも魅力。
