~ Tokoname-yaki Teapot Tokoname Pottery is the oldest pottery in Japan with a tradition dating back to around 1100 AD. It is known as one of the six oldest kilns along with Bizen, Tanba, Shigaraki, Seto, and Echizen. In November 1976, Tokoname-yaki kyusu was designated as a traditional handicraft by the Japanese government. Tokoname-yaki kyusu is characterized by the use of clay with a high iron-powder content, which is well tempered and fine-grained. In order to prevent the lid and body from rattling, they are rubbed together one by one. This process ensures a tight seal and a rich flavor of tea.
