大日如来は、弘法大師 （空海）が伝えた密教の経典に登場する最高位の仏さまです。古代インドの言葉でマハー・ヴァイローチャナといい、毘盧舎那如来をさらにパワーアップさせた仏さまです。密教では、宇宙は、ダイヤモンドのように何があってもこわれない智恵の世界（金剛界）と、すべてを包みこむ慈悲の世界（胎蔵界）でできていると考えます。その両方の力をかねそなえたのが大日如来なのです。忍者のように手指を組む智拳印の金剛界大日如来は、最高の悟りの智恵をしめします。坐禅をするときのように手指を組む法界定印の胎蔵界大日如来は、悟りのはたらきである慈悲をしめします。その2つの姿は表裏 一体であり、切りはなすことはできません。ほかの如来とは別格で、宝冠をかむり、胸かざりや腕輪など、きらびやかなアクセサリーを身みにつけています。
