文殊菩薩は「三人寄 れば文殊の智恵」のことわざでよく知られる智恵の仏さまです。文殊は古代インドに実在した人物で、ぬきん出た智恵を持ち、お釈迦 さまの教えを経典にまとめたといわれます。熱心な在家信者の維摩居士と仏の教えについて問答をしたことが『維摩経』に書かれています。 百獣の王である獅子の上に置 かれた蓮台にすわり、経巻をのせた蓮華と宝剣を持つ騎獅像が一般的です。4人の従者を連つれた「渡海文殊」は、文殊が仏教を中国から日本へ伝える姿とされます。禅宗のお寺では、修行僧の手本としてお坊さんの姿をした聖僧文殊がまつられます。また、文殊の智恵は純粋無垢であることから子どもの姿をした稚児文殊などもあります。 うさぎ年の守り本尊で、「智恵明瞭」「学業成就」のご利益があるといわれています。
