The incarnations of the Five Wisdom Buddhas of the Vajrayana Realm are known as the "Five Great Emptiness Bodhisattvas. His name means a storehouse of infinite wisdom and virtues like the universe. When he was young, Kobo-Daishi (Kukai) acquired superhuman memory through the practice of "Kokuzo Bosatsu Gumonmochiho," in which he recited the name of Kokuzo Bodhisattva one million times. Nichiren also prayed for 21 days in the hall of Kokuzo Bosatsu to be given the greatest wisdom in Japan. Even today, there is a custom called "Jusan-mairi" (13th pilgrimage), in which people visit Kokuzo Bosatsu when they turn 13 years old. It is the guardian deity of the year of the ox and the year of the tiger, and is blessed with the blessings of "destruction of sins," "clear-headedness," "improvement of memory," and "improvement of skills and arts. 虚空蔵菩薩は密教の仏さまです。金剛界五智如来の化仏がついた宝冠をかむり、如意宝珠を持っています。また、金剛界五智如来の化身が「五大虚空蔵菩薩」とされます。虚空蔵菩薩の名は宇宙のような無限の智恵と福徳がつまっている貯蔵庫を意味し、その智恵は記憶力を増し、技能や芸術の知識にもおよびます。 弘法大師 （空海）は若いころ、虚空蔵菩薩の名を100万回となえる「虚空蔵菩薩求聞持法」という修行によって超人的な記憶力を身につけました。また、日蓮も日本一の智恵を授ずけてくれるよう虚空蔵菩薩のお堂に21日間こもり祈願しました。いまも「十三詣り」といって13歳になるとき虚空蔵菩薩にお参りする風習が各地に残っています。うし年・とら年の守り本尊で、「滅罪招福」「頭脳明晰」「記憶力増進」「技芸向上」のご利益があります。
