The Old Morino Yakuen (Dauda Ward, Uda City, Nara Prefecture), founded by Tousuke Morino (Sai Kaku), is the oldest private botanical garden in Japan. Sai Kaku copied the plants and other materials from the medicinal garden in colorful illustrations [Matsuyama Honzo], which were highly artistic and exquisite botanical paintings, and were not available outside of the garden. Both are valuable materials that convey to the present day the appearance of medicinal plants that were cultivated* and growing wild at the time, and are time capsules that provide insight into the natural environment of Yamato. What we have learned from the present state of the art and research is presented here, together with the illustrations.
