Tekijuku Kinenkai Ogata Koan Complete Works Editorial Committee, ed.

Ogata Koan was a leading Dutch scholar, physician, and educator in Japan at the end of the Edo period. His achievements are widely known, including the introduction of Western medicine, education at Tekijuku, which produced many prominent figures who contributed greatly to the modernization of Japan, including Fukuzawa Yukichi, and the smallpox business, which prevented smallpox, the most feared disease of the time. The first two volumes to be published as Volumes I and II are the most important of Koan's works, "Buji Jiken Isshikin" (The Legacy of Experience of Buji). In order to promote the development of medicine in Japan, Koan put all his effort into translating the best book on internal medicine in Europe at the time, written by Professor Hufeland of the University of Berlin. The reprinting, notes, commentary, and index were done by Dr. Tetsuo Shiba. We sincerely hope that the publication of this collection will be an opportunity to reevaluate the historical role played by Ogata Koan. (From Seiichi Washida, Chairman of the Tekijuku Memorial Association and President of Osaka University, on the publication of "The Complete Works of Ogata Koan")
