本書は国内外で活発に発表をする彫刻家・矢部裕輔の初めての作品集。
矢部裕輔は、素材であるずっしりとした木材や小さな木片、廃材なども使い、あえて表面を木工ドリルで穴だらけにしたり、生々しい削り跡を残したままにしながら、強烈な存在感を放つモンスターや悪魔、愛らしい反面ちょっと怖さが潜む女の子やユーモラスな動物、不可解な生き物などを次々と生みだしていく。
様々な姿や表情をした作品に込められているものは、一貫して「人間とは何なのか？」という思いである。人間社会が抱える不条理や悪意、暴力性といった部分と、弱さと強さに揺れながら善意や愛情をもって生きる部分との矛盾。私たちは一体どんな生き物なのか。矢部作品にはそんな人間への愛しさが滲んでいる。
