享保元〜寛政12年(1716〜1800)、京都生まれ。家業の青物問屋のかたわら狩野派を学ぶが、39歳で家督を弟へ譲り、絵に専念する生活に入る。元・明の古画と光琳派という和漢の装飾画を研究するかたわら、動植物の写生に勤め、特に鶏の絵を得意とした。独特の画風から「奇想の画家」と呼ばれた。代表作は『動植彩絵』。
