The first scroll is a caricature of anthropomorphic figures. Scroll A is the most popular among the four scrolls, as it depicts anthropomorphic animals in a spontaneous and relaxed manner. The author of the scroll is said to be the Toba priest Kakuyu (1053-1140), but there is no proof, and various theories exist. Recent research has revealed that the order of the paintings has been changed since the original. It is thought that this is because they were originally divided into two volumes and then joined together.
