This is the latest book in the "Rivers of Japan" series by Akira Muramatsu, a bird's-eye view cartographer* who has drawn rivers all over Japan. The Arakawa River, 173 km long, flows out of the mountains of Chichibu, passes through Saitama and Tokyo prefectures, and empties into Tokyo Bay. At the middle of the river, it splits into the Sumida River and the main branch of the Arakawa River. From the Meiji Era to the Showa Era. The Arakawa River and the Sumida River became two rivers when a new main branch of the Arakawa River was excavated downstream. The god Okuchichibu and his messenger, a girl, ride on a cloud to guide us along the river from the upper reaches, where mines are located and many fossils are found, through the middle reaches, where people have received blessings while fighting against the river, to the sea in the big city of Tokyo*.
