In Japan, academic research on chansons is still lagging behind. Since its introduction to Japan through Takarazuka Revue reviews, theme songs and inserts in French films, and radio and recordings, chansons*françaises have developed and transformed into a musical genre unique to Japan, losing their original historicity and diversity, along with their longing for France, Although chanson*française has produced many chanson singers and lovers who sing with lyrics translated into Japanese (often heavily rewritten to suit Japanese sensibilities), its subcultural aspect has become more prominent, and it has not been the subject of academic research. Therefore, although there are many books and magazines that have introduced French singers and lyrics since the 20th century, none of them have reached the level of academic research.
Under these circumstances, the Chanson Study Group was established in 2002 with the aim of laying the foundation for academic research and development of chansons in Japan. In order to examine the history and reality of chanson culture in France from various perspectives, to place it squarely in the history of French culture, and to clarify what role it has played in the history of French culture from an interdisciplinary perspective, we have welcomed researchers and specialists in a variety of fields, including French literature, French studies, Western history, aesthetics, and musicology. The 20th anniversary of the founding of the study group has brought together researchers and specialists in a variety of fields, including French literature, French studies, Western history, aesthetics and musicology.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Society's establishment, this book was published with a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Publication of Scientific Research Results (JSPS) to summarize the outstanding essays by its members and to contribute to the development of academic research on chansons in Japan. The essays in this book represent a variety of approaches to the chanson française from the 19th century to the present, all of which are pioneering studies that have rarely been treated in Japan. The book consists of 11 chapters in total, and while we have attempted to achieve a certain degree of formal uniformity, we have left the style to the judgment of each author. This has resulted in a richly individual essay, which, along with the variety of themes, has prevented monotony and increased the pleasure of reading the book. It is my sincere hope that readers will be able to experience the charm of the chanson française, a bouquet of popular culture, and some of its realities through this book.
