Description
Mizuho Kato 400 pages, full color How did electric clothes become flat? --The first monograph for reconsidering the Gutai Art Association The Gutai Art Association (abbreviated as Gutai, 1954-1972), based in Osaka and the Hanshin area, was an avant-garde art group that occupied an important position in the history of art after World War II, not only in Japan but also from a global perspective. This book is the first study of Atsuko Tanaka (1932-2005), one of its main members. It examines the originality of Tanaka's works and clarifies how the characteristics of her work were formed in the context of her relationship with Gutai leader Jiro Yoshihara and Akira Kanayama, a member of the group. This careful review of Tanaka's and Kanayama's works, which have not been adequately discussed, will bring a new perspective to the study of Gutai. In order to examine their works from a broader perspective, we will also look at the avant-garde art trends of the time and attempt to understand the "Gutai Art Manifesto" from the perspective of the reception of informel as advocated by Michel Tapie. By clarifying the process of Yoshihara's thinking on the concept of "material" and "concrete," and tracing its origins, we have presented a framework for future research. At the end of the book is a rare interview with Atsuko Tanaka, who talks about her own work. |
