[This is the first children's book by Masaki Maruyama, who made a splash with "Deaf*Voice: Sign Language Interpreter in Court" (Bunshun Bunko). [Since then, he has published other works in the Deaf*Voice series, including Lamentations: Lamentations Cannot Be Heard (Tokyo Sogensha, Inc.). This work was written as a spin-off of the series and takes place at the school of Miwa, a child of the main character's sign language interpreter who is a coda (a hearing child raised in a family with deaf parents), and her friend Eichi, who appears in the second work in the series. [Stories such as "Watering Jiisan," "The Bookmark That Disappeared in the Library," "The Cat Incident," and "The Deaf Grandmother" are gradually linked together, with elements of mystery added. Miwa can use sign language, which she learned from her father-in-law. Eichi, who has a developmental disability and has a condition called "scene retardation," is also unable to speak in public, but has learned sign language, and their conversation is in sign language. A story full of originality. Can the mystery be solved? Explanation of sign language is included at the end of the book.
