日本書紀は古事記の8年後、720年にできあがった。
全30巻の大著で、第41代持統天皇までを記録する。
古事記が具体的な記述を終える顕宗天皇以降が
全体の半分以上に達し、編纂を命じた天武天皇に
至っては、上下2巻にわたって語られている。
目的は海外に向かって日本の正史を披露するためで、
国家的事業として多くの皇子が関わり、最終的に
天武の子である舎人親王がまとめ上げた。
中国の正史にならい、神話をのぞいて年代を追って
記述する形式が採用され、物語性を薄める要因にもなった。
