Description
This is a book and catalogue of the unprecedented retrospective exhibition of Hiroshi Noda, one of Japan's leading realistic painters, which toured four museums (Yamaguchi Prefectural Museum of Art, Himeji Municipal Museum of Art, Nara Prefectural Museum of Art, and Sapporo Art Park Museum) in terms of both content and scale. Divided into six chapters covering more than 60 years of his creative activities, the book includes works from his student days when he was still searching for his own style, illustrations and designs from his days at an advertising company, detailed still-life paintings with black backgrounds (the Black Period) from the time when he made a strong debut in the art world, newspaper serials that made Noda's name widely known to the general public, original illustrations for novels, and a variety of other works. The exhibition also features Noda's recent life-size paintings of human figures (the Sacred and Sublime series).
