This is the first book in Japan that traces the trajectory of Scharffbeck's soul as she looked at her subjects and herself while sharing her destiny with various people in the turbulent period before and after independence and the birth of a new country, Finland. At the age of three, she had an accident that left her left leg crippled. She was unable to attend school due to this disability, but at the age of 11, she was discovered to have a talent for painting by a private tutor. At the age of 18, he received a scholarship to Paris to experience the cutting edge of art. Strongly influenced by Manet, Cézanne, and Whistler, he also traveled to Brittany in France* and Cornwall in England*, which greatly broadened his view of art. He returned to Finland to teach at a drawing school in Helsinki, but resigned his position due to illness and moved with his mother to Huivinkaa to recuperate, where he remained for 15 years while continuing to work. |

◆ヘレン・シャルフベック(1862-1946)
1862年ヘルシンキに生まれる。
3歳の時に事故にあい左足が不自由となる。そのため学校に通うことができなかったが、家庭教師から学ぶうち11歳の時に絵の才能を見いだされる。
18歳で奨学金を得て、パリに渡り最先端の美術を体験する。
マネやセザンヌ、ホイッスラーらの強い影響を受け、フランス・ブルターニュ地方やイギリス・コーンウォール地方なども旅することで、芸術観を大きく広げる。
フィンランドに戻りヘルシンキの素描学校で教鞭を執るものの病気がちで職を辞し、療養もかねて母親と転居したヒュヴィンカーに15年間とどまりながら制作を続けた。
