Description
During the 19th and 20th centuries, amidst the chaotic social conditions of rapid modernization and repeated wars, a longing for "somewhere other than here" was expressed in literature and art. Claude Monet (1840-1926) and Henri Matisse (1869-1954) are two artists who share a deep affinity in that they created an artificial "paradise" in the real world by composing gardens and interior spaces as they saw fit. At the end of the 19th century, Monet left modernizing Paris and made Giverny his final home. In the garden of his mansion, Monet cultivated plants, created a pond, and created his ideal garden, and while living there he created a series of paintings with water lilies as the subject. Matisse, who settled in the south of France, also decorated his rooms as if they were a theater stage by freely combining textiles and furnishings. These motifs, along with the light of the south of France, decorated Matisse's studio and works. Monet's garden and Matisse's interior. Their "paradise" was not only an indispensable subject matter, but also a place of production and an environment in which to live. This book examines how these two artists created their "paradises" and sublimated them into their works of art through color illustrations and text. This is the official catalogue and book of the Pola Museum of Art [Monet and Matisse: Another Paradise]. *Bilingual (English and Japanese) Planning/Paula Museum of Art |
